Saugatuck is a culturally interesting community in Allegan County, about 30 minutes west of Grand Rapids. As of the 2000 census the population was just over 1,000. Saugatuck was originally a port and lumber town and in the arts and crafts movement of the late 19th century, Saugatuck became a noted art colony and tourist destination. Saugatuck was home to the Big Pavillion, a large dance hall and attracted bands and visitors from accross the Midwest until it burned down in 1960.
Today, Saugatuck is a major tourist draw because of it's harbor, marinas, art galleries, unusual shops, the view from the top of Mount Baldhead as well as Oval Beach on Lake Michigan. The Saugatuck Dunes State Park as well as the Allegan State Park are also a popular destination.
